MASVINGO City Council is set to sub-contract local transport operators to help beef up the refuse collection system in the city.
According to the latest minutes of the Health, Housing and Environmental Services Committee, of the three refuse compactors of the local authority, only one was reported to have been servicing the whole city’s 10 wards.

“On refuse collection, the chief environmental health officer Ms Suzanne Madamombe reported that only one refuse truck was operational and the two were down.

It was suggested and agreed that council should make a standing arrangement with local transport operators, wherein the operators would provide refuse collection services to cover the gap created by breakdown of refuse compactors.

It was also proposed and agreed and the Health, Housing and Environmental Services Committee should conduct a learning visit to the City of Bulawayo to appreciate sub-contracting of refuse collection services to private companies in the city,” reads the report.

Chamber Secretary for the City of Masvingo is Mr. Vitalis Shonhai.

The committee resolved that the chamber secretary Mr Vitalis Shonhai be instructed to organise a learning visit to the City of Bulawayo by the committee to appreciate their sub-contracting services to private companies.

Meanwhile, under the health section, the committee resolved to incorporate Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health friendly centres to improve services to the youth and to construct a safe house.

“On Eastvale satellite clinic, it was reported that the clinic would be incorporated into an Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health (ASRH) friendly Environment Centre to improve access to reproductive health services by the youth. It was also indicated that construction of a safe house would be considered for the Gender-Based Violence victims in the area,” read part of the minutes.
