THE Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland South Province, Hon Abednico Ncube has said the upcoming national census will provide Government with relevant statistics to formulate policies to improve people’s lives.

Minister Ncube was speaking at the training of enumerators at Gwanda State University last week. The training was also attended by Zimstats director for demography and social statistics Mr Aluwisio Mukavhi.

“His Excellency President Mnangagwa emphasised that the 2022 population and housing census will not leave anyone behind. The census will provide statistical data of people with functional difficulties. It will also provide demographic information and estimate of our Zimbabwean diaspora population.

“The 2022 population and housing census will provide comprehensive information on levels of education, literacy and fields of specialisation of our population.

The 2022 census will have significant emphasis on housing characteristics and living conditions. Data will be collected on such aspects as access to electricity, types of dwelling units and sources of drinking water, among others.

This will enable our province to come up with interventions to ensure that we improve livelihoods of the populace in line with the National Development Strategy 1,” he said.

He added that the 2022 population and housing census was going digital which will facilitate timely processing and analysis of data and also encouraged the enumeration area supervisors to take the training seriously.

Chief Ndube said the census is one of the major pillars of development because it informs Government of the population size, distribution and age structure.

“This programme is very important, as chiefs it is important for us to know how many people are in our villages and the Government should also know the country’s population for developmental purposes according to the number of people,” she said. The exercise will be carried out from April 20 to April 30.
