Midlands police are intensifying efforts to locate Thomas Dube, who reportedly skipped bail after facing charges of violating the Public Order and Security Act.

Dube, along with his colleagues, was arrested following their involvement in an unauthorized meeting in Gweru, sparking concerns about political activism aligned with the opposition MDC.

Authorities had granted Dube bail, but he allegedly fled out of fear for his safety and well-being. Sources close to the matter, speaking anonymously, claim that Dube’s relatives disclosed details of his abduction and subsequent torture by alleged Zanu-PF supporters.

These individuals allegedly warned him to abandon his allegiance to the opposition party.

Dube’s arrest came after he and fellow activists convened a meeting without the necessary police clearance. The meeting was deemed illegal under the Public Order and Security Act, which requires prior approval for public gatherings.

According to Dube’s relatives, who spoke on condition of anonymity, he was abducted shortly after being granted bail by the courts. They alleged that not only was he forcibly taken, but his father, Takawira Fani Dube, was also abducted together with him.

The family claims that both were subjected to brutal torture, with the intention of pressuring Dube to abandon his association with the MDC and cease his political activism.

Midlands police have launched a manhunt to locate Thomas Dube and bring him back into custody. Law enforcement authorities have also said they are working diligently to investigate the allegations made by Dube’s relatives regarding his forced disappearance and subsequent mistreatment.

“As the search for Dube continues, it is crucial for the authorities to prioritise a fair and transparent investigation into these serious allegations. Upholding the principles of justice and ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, remains paramount for Zimbabwe’s democracy to thrive,” said a police source.

Efforts to obtain comment from Zanu-PF representatives regarding the allegations of abduction and torture have been unsuccessful thus far. It is hoped that a thorough investigation will shed light on the circumstances surrounding Dube’s disappearance and provide clarity on the alleged involvement of political supporters.
