MILTON High School teachers have been applauded for acquiring Master’s Degrees and Doctorates after the school engaged in a rebranding programme as it celebrates more than a century of existence.

Speaking at a speech and prize-giving day ceremony held at the school on Friday, Bulawayo prominent lawyer who was guest speaker, Mr Promise Ncube said he was pleased with the teachers who have chosen to further their studies to enhance their skills.

“I would like to applaud the teachers who have chosen to do Master’s Degrees and Doctorates as this will help the school keep pace with the moving world. This will also motive children to take their studies seriously and study further like them,” said Mr Ncube, a senior partner at Coghlan and Welsh Partners.

Mr Ncube said it was important for the school to rebrand to remain relevant in the wake of changing societal needs and heightened competition.

“It is necessary to rebrand because societal trends are changing, the audience is always changing, the type of parent is changing, the type of child is changing, the competition is not only changing but increasing as well and there is even the emergence of home schooling which is a real threat to the traditional school system,” he said.

Milton High School headmaster Mr Similo Ncube encouraged other teachers to also enhance their skills to ensure the school continues to be a centre of excellence.

“We have six teachers who have graduated with Master’s Degrees and about eight who are going to study. There are also two who are studying for their doctorates. I want to encourage other teachers to take them up so that we can catch up with the world. You know this will bring the change that we want. You know it will bring better management, better learning and better understanding,” he said.

Meanwhile, one of the pupils, Tanaka Ruswa, took the award for being the best student with highest number of As at Ordinary Level in last year’s examinations scoring 7As while four students emerged as the highest with 13 points in Advanced Level.

Despite the gradual increase in the pass rate, Milton High still managed to be a sporting power house having scooped the bronze medal in the National Rugby games and taking the District gold medal for the third time in a row in athletics.

One of the pupils has also been incorporated into the Sadc darts team after getting a gold medal in regional darts competitions held in South Africa.

The headmaster announced that the school has also secured 15 laptops for the use in line with the updated curriculum.
