THE Government continues to receive more support from various players to strengthen its capacity to contain and manage the spread of Covid-19 especially in border towns and rural health care centres.

Last week, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) donated an assortment of personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control material to the Beitbridge District Covid-19 Task Force.

The equipment included 2 000 surgical masks, 600 N95 masks, 1 000 gloves, 11 by 1 000-litre water tanks and several overalls, plastic aprons, hazmat suits, hand sanitisers, mops, foot pedal bins, external refuse bins, infrared thermometers, triple AAA batteries, bin liners and goggles, among other items.

IRC country director Mr Zvidzai Maburutse said the items would be shared among the 16 rural health care centres, the district referral hospital and the National Social Security Authority (Nssa) quarantine centre for returnees. In a speech read on his behalf by Beitbridge team leader, Ms Sylvia Khumalo, Mr Maburutse said the organisation was supporting the Government under a six-month Global Programme Response Plan.

“We will be following up with additional support of medical equipment to all 16 rural health centres and we believe this will ensure access to timely medical care and treatment for Covid-19 patients. This will help reduce new transmissions at both health facilities and communities,” he said.
