A PUPIL at Mtshabezi High School in Gwanda District, Matabeleland South aced 13 As in the 2019 Ordinary Level Zimsec examinations, becoming the first day scholar at the institution to attain the feat.
Sibongusizolwenkosi Sibanda was among the top candidates at the school, a boarding institution, who obtained high grades.
In a telephone interview, Mtshabezi High School deputy headmaster Mr Ishmael Sibanda said the pupil was hardworking and had always shown the hunger to succeed. He said the pupil sat for the June public examinations where he attained Bs but was not content with the symbols hence he repeated the subjects in the November examinations.
Mr Sibanda said the school was trying its best to maintain an excellent academic trend and equip pupils with the necessary skills to proceed with their education.
“As a school we are hoping that the boy gets financial support for him to join others in the boarding house so that he may be able to have enough study time and discuss with others as his future is looking bright. This is a big achievement for us as a school, it is a clear indication that teachers are moving in the right direction and I would like to extend my gratitude to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the parents for their good co-operation towards creating a conducive learning environment,” said Mr Sibanda.
He said of the 199 pupils who wrote the O-level examinations, 189 recorded five passes and above. That translated to a 96,92 percent pass rate putting the school among the top 100 in the country.
“In Ndebele, 93 pupils got As, in Combined Science we had 55, Mathematics 58, Agriculture 24, Biology seven, Accounts 48, Chemistry 20 and English 27,” he said.
Meanwhile, the school is embarking on a project to install solar lights to allow enough reading time for pupils due to increased electricity load shedding.
