A MAN from Hwange was assaulted after he tried to play peacemaker while trying to restrain his friend who was assaulting his wife for refusing him sex on New Year’s Eve.

Kelvin Tshuma paid dearly for trying to play peacemaker in a domestic dispute between an infuriated Brian Nkomazana (27) of N42 Lwendulu Village, Hwange and his wife whose name was not given in court. Nkomazana felt his conjugal rights were violated when his wife turned down his request to go to bed with him before assaulting her, prompting his friend, Tshuma to intervene by trying to restrain him from further assaulting his wife.

Nkomazana who was convicted on his own plea of guilty pleaded guilty when he appeared before Hwange provincial magistrate Miss Sharon Rosemani facing assault charges.

“Your worship, I acted out of anger when my wife refused to sleep with me on New Year’s Eve and I became violent resulting in my friend being caught up in the misunderstanding. May you forgive me, it wasn’t my intention to assault him or my wife, anger got the better of me,” pleaded Nkomazana.

The magistrate, however, ordered an assessment of Nkomazana to see if he was fit to undergo community service before she could pass sentence. The court heard that on 31 December last year, Tshuma visited Nkomazana’s residence and unexpectedly found him having a domestic dispute with his wife while holding a knife.

Sensing danger, Tshuma tried to divert his friend’s attention by inviting him to accompany him to Davis Beer Hall in Simangani for drink as per their earlier plan.

However, Nkomazana, who was still locked in the dispute refused, leading to an altercation which saw Tshuma being punched once on the mouth and stabbed above the right ear.

Tshuma sustained visible injuries on the mouth and head as a result of the assault. He was referred to the hospital for treatment.

A report was made to the police, leading to Nkomazana’s arrest. Mr Onias Nyathi appeared for the State.
