THE issue of prize money at the Simon Muzenda Gutu Half Marathon has once again caused some misunderstanding as athletes are calling on the organisers to come out clean on this year’s monetary rewards.

One of the top athletes in the country who spoke on condition of anonymity said they feel betrayed by the management of the event as it is their right to know how much they are competing for.

The event was founded by the late Vice-President and National Hero, Simon Vengai Muzenda, 21 years ago to promote sport in rural areas in a sustainable manner.

“Athletes deserve to know the exact amount of money they are competing for, no one can work without knowing how much exactly they are going to be paid. If not, it will become difficult for them (athletes) to participate,” said an athlete who asked not to be named.

As of last year the winners of the 21-kilometre race have been receiving $600 down from $2 500 with only the top five being rewarded, instead of the first 10, while there would be no monetary rewards for other age groups such as the veterans and juniors.

However, the chairman of the event’s organising committee, Titus Madzingo denied all the allegations.

“What is said by the athletes is not true. The amount given to the winners after the event is the exact amount promised to them. The amount promised to them also depends on the sponsors that is the Muzenda family and other well wishers,” said Madzingo. This year’s race is scheduled for 6 November.
