A 37-year-old man from Masvingo was stabbed to death by a security guard when he attempted to invade a mine in Zvishavane as mine wars continue erupting despite recent police warnings.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed that police were investigating a case of murder which occurred on 31 December in the evening.

Insp Goko identified the deceased as Johannes Muzhanje (37) from Muzhanje Village, under Chief Shumba in Masvingo.

“Police in Zvishavane are investigating a case where a man was stabbed with an Okapi knife at Red Knight Mine,” said Insp Goko.

Insp Goko said Muzhanje allegedly approached Tapson Vengai (25) who was on duty at Red Knight Mine with the intention of getting into the mine which he was manning.

“It is alleged that when Vengai was on duty at Red Knight Mine, Mabhula in Zvishavane, Muzhanje approached him intending to enter the mine which he was securing. Vengai denied Muzhanje entry into the mine and a misunderstanding ensued between the two and it degenerated into a fist fight,” said Insp Goko.

Insp Goko said in the fight that ensued Muzhanje was then stabbed with an Okapi knife several times on the left side of his chest, on the head and below the right shoulder.

“Muzhanje passed out and later died after having been stabbed with the Okapi knife by Vengai,” he said.

The matter was reported to the police in Zvishavane who attended the scene.

“A report was made at  a police station in Zvishavane leading to the arrest of Vengai while the body of Muzhanje was taken to Zvishavane District Hospital for a post-mortem,” Insp Goko said.
