GRADE 7 pupils at Sigola Primary School in Umzingwane, Matabeleland South province received a timely boost in preparation for their examinations when a former student donated five desktop computers to the school.

Pupils sitting for their Information and Communications Technology (ICT) examinations will immediately benefit from the donation as the school only had one computer. A former pupil based in the United Kingdom, Miss Sinikiwe Ndlovu donated the five computers on Tuesday while the Sigola Foundation Trust, an organisation composed of former pupils handed over uniforms to more than 100 orphans.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mrs Sithabile Mpedzisi, representing Miss Ndlovu, said the former student saw it fit to give out the computers since times have changed and the world had become digital.

“I would like to say what Sinikiwe did is very wonderful, there are very few people who think about home when they are outside the country. This is very touching because this donation came at a time when it is indeed needed as everyone can see that these days everything is done virtually and here she says no let me help learners at my former school back home,” she said.

Sigola Foundation Trust spokesperson Mr Innocent Mukazhu said they donated Mighty markers as well to help teachers, and  stationery and they will continue helping pupils especially orphans and those who cannot afford to buy uniforms.

“As an organisation it is our responsibility to help the students who are orphans so they can fit in with other students. Usually orphans struggle to buy books and uniforms and feel uncomfortable when they are with other children at school and they end up dropping from school. I invite anyone who wants to join us so that we help our school to develop even in terms of infrastructure we never know maybe these are our doctors and presidents,” Mr Mukazhu said.

The school’s headmaster, Mr Vusa Lunga, said he is very grateful for the donations and really appreciate what the former students have done.

“We only had one computer which was difficult to use teaching more than 50 learners but now with five it will mean learners have more practical lessons.

“I encourage other diasporians to follow what our children have done,” said Mr Lunga.
