THE extreme drinking habits of a 20-year-old Plumtree man have landed him in trouble after he appeared in court for insulting his 45-year-old neighbour and damaging her property.
In a bid to justify his actions, Mpumelelo Makandiwire of Dingumuzi told the court that he had had too much to drink.
The court heard that he destroyed $120 worth of property belonging to his neighbour Catherine Ncube and also insulted her by mentioning her private parts and those of her mother.
Prosecuting, Mr Clemence Shawarira said Makandiwire committed the offence on 23 November at around 8pm.
He said he proceeded to the complainant’s homestead and struck her door using large stones and ordered her to come out of the house.
“Makandiwire pelted the complainant’s door until it developed a dent and then he went on to uproot two poles which were at the complainant’s entrance. The valued damage is $120,” said Shawarira.
He said Makandiwire also insulted the complainant with vulgar words by mentioning her private parts and that of her mother and then walked away.
The complainant reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
Plumtree magistrate Mr Livard Philemon warned Makandiwire against irresponsible drinking.
He said the sentence given to him would serve as a lesson for the future.
Mr Philemon sentenced Makandiwire to nine months imprisonment of which three months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit an offence of the same nature.
Three more months were suspended on condition that he performs 105 hours of community service at the Plumtree magistrate’s court.
The remaining three months were suspended on condition that he pays the complainant $120 as compensation for damaging her property.
