THERE are various ways of sprucing up the look of your place, especially your children’s rooms — one of the ways is artwork.

Even if you are not an expert in art — anyone and everyone can easily decorate their space with art and painting. Make sure that the artwork that you use not only creates a lively place but also conversation pieces and a flow to the decor of your home.

One thing to note is that artwork doesn’t have to dominate your rooms; it should enhance them. This week’s column will help you in enhancing your home even at a zero budget.

The most essential factor when decorating your space with artwork is the balance of the items vis-à-vis the room. There should be balance between the paintings and the rest of the room to avoid distractions and the artwork or painting. For instance if you decide to hang paintings make sure that the item which is below or next to it is the same size, by so doing unity and harmony will be created. Arrange the furniture and the paintings so that they work together and fill the space that a single, larger print might have covered, while being in scale with the piece of furniture they counterbalance.

Selecting a theme is very crucial, that way you will be avoiding to be all over the place and it also shows that you have order. It will help you decide what type of art to put in your space. For example, in the kitchen you could have a food motif, where all the art displayed has something to do with food. This way, you have a theme that connects via the art and the function of the room itself. Your motif could even stretch through the whole home, if you so desire.

When buying your painting make sure you consider different items in your space from the materials to colours that you have used in your room. Try to relate colour patterns or other styles with existing elements in the room. For example, in a red room with a lot of red and brown accent pieces, a painting of red and brown chickens or a tapestry with those colours stand alone as art and complement the rest of the room.

At times people tend to be excited when buying paintings and they end up over doing it. Avoid overcrowding your paintings.

Leave plenty of space between pieces and give them room to stand on their own without being out of context. For example, if you have 20 pieces of art hanging on a wall, your room loses focus and the art itself becomes a blur rather than a focus.

Artwork should serve as an accent to the room as a whole.
