THIS winter hasn’t been too cold so people could rock part of their summer clothes. Jeans, a nice top with a jacket of choice has been the order. But summer is weeks away and we can’t wait to get rid of the heavy clothes and unleash the summer fashionistas from within. We look forward to bright colours, cut outs that show the skin and the weirdest prints that leave us shocked.
If you are still planning your summer wardrobe, these are the must haves:
Bold Stripes
Stripes are always an in trend no matter the season, the only difference in summer is that they become brighter and bolder. They’re especially fresh in the form of a knit dress (which is a big trend right now KNIT DRESSES). Get yourself striped tops, dresses, blazers and even shoes if you want to push the boundaries.
Cold Shoulder
You didn’t think the cold shoulder was going anywhere, did you? This trend always finds its way back into our closets. When it broke into the fashion scene it was mostly casual garments that were a one-shoulder. Now we have work blouses and formal jackets that have one arm.
Patchwork
Fashion is fashion right? We don’t have to love or buy anything on trend and the patchwork trend is an example. This trend is definitely for the bold and daring. A patchwork jacket will always look chic, especially if its in denim or leather.
Slogan Tees
As crazy as it sounds the slogan tees are in. Although the trend has developed seasons earlier, it was recently ramped up on the runways again. Models and fashion bloggers have been early adopters of this socially and politically conscious look, with many spotted wearing the now-famous “We Should All Be Feminists” tee which has broken the social media technically. Brands, designers and stores are all jumping on the trend for slogan tees, although not all come with politically-themed messages. Do a get a sexy one.
Sporty spice
2016 has officially been the year of the hoodie. So what about this summer? The athelesuire trend has been making waves in the western countries. The sporty look, the I’m-from-the gym kind of look is what people are wearing to events and work (depending on where you work). This look is more about comfort as the garments come is weird silhouettes and prints.
Pink power
Pink should be every girls’ go to colour. Its just so pretty and cute. (Not for everyday though) — pink particularly of the fuchsia variety is flooding the magazines and fashion bloggers are on about it. Whether you choose to layer lots of different hues, or colour block by wearing coats over statement tee and dresses you won’t go wrong as long as it’s pink, pink, pink.
Robes (gown)
Fashion’s loungewear obsession has evolved these past seasons to something more elegant and mature. We’ve had pyjama dressing and even duvet coats, but now it’s time for loungewear’s sophisticated older sister: the robe coat. A mix between a kimono and a dressing gown, the robe was brought out of the bedroom and onto the catwalk. Fashion houses are launching the decadent silk and velvety incarnations, while the high street is slowly following suit with embroidered versions.
The trick is, as usual, in the styling. Consider proportions: pair with a midi-length silk style over cropped, straight-leg jeans and block heels/chunky heel. Alternatively, wear the robe on its own as a luxurious eveningwear option, or with silk, wide-leg trousers.
Summer, here we come!
