WAR veteran, Cde Kenneth Moyo who died last week in Bulawayo was yesterday laid to rest at Bulawayo Provincial Heroe’s Acre in Nkulumane.
He was 72. Cde Moyo whose pseudo name was Adams Mpala died on Sunday last week at a Bulawayo hospital after battling kidney failure. He was born on 15 August 1947 in Matobo District’s Marinoha area, which is under Chief Herben Fuyane.
Family spokesperson and nephew to Cde Moyo, Mr Phonsen Moyo said his uncle was a good family man, a Christian who loved farming. Cde Moyo attended Marinoha Primary School under Chief Fuyane and then proceeded to work at Roberts Construction in Bulawayo for 15 years.
In 1976 he decided to leave the company and joined the armed struggle through Botswana from where he was flown to Zambia and taken to Nampundwe transit camp. From Nampundwe he was sent to Mwembeshi for military training camp. After training he was taken to Foxhole and Moscow Camp. He was further trained in engineering at CGT3 Camp where he also did a course as a commissar.
In 1978 he was deployed to Mashonaland West Province and his operations covered areas such as Nyawodzi, Mvuti and Mawere where he operated there until the ceasefire. After the attainment of the ceasefire he and his unit moved to Romeo Assembly Point near Chinhoyi. From there he proceeded to Chitungwiza and then to Gwayi River Mine where he was integrated into the Zimbabwe National Army under 1-7 battalion in Bhalagwe near Maphisa Growth Point.
After 1-7 battalion was disbanded he was posted to 1-9 battalion in Ntabazinduna and later on posted to One Brigade.
He retired from the army in 1995. After retirement he worked for the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) and Zesa for a few months until he left due to illness. He is survived by a wife, Mrs Beauty Moyo, four children and seven grandchildren.
