A SENIOR police officer has been sentenced to nine years in jail for helping a fugitive skip the country.

Inspector Nkosana Ndlovu who pleaded guilty to the offence was convicted after a full trial at the Bulawayo magistrate court.

He is alleged to have assisted wanted Gay activist and the founding member of Dubies Gays and Lesbians Rights Fighters (DGRLF), Mr Xolani Ncube to flee the country.

Insp Ndlovu was arrested on 4 December after his suspension from work following investigation on his conduct.

Bulawayo magistrate learnt that Ndlovu helped the fugitive to flee the country after he gave him all the information that was going to help the police put the fugitive in prison.

The court also heard that Ndlovu also wrote a statement witnessing the death of the fugitive’s mother and also stealing and sending a copy of warrant arrest to the fugitive informing him about his arrest order.

Ncube has been on the run for over two years now, his whereabouts remain unknown.

When Ndlovu was asked about Ncube’s whereabouts, he claimed he was not aware of where he was.

Ncube skipped the country after he was placed on bail facing charges of engaging in homosexuality activities and illegally holding meetings in support of gays and lesbians.

In litigation Ndlovu said he did what any friend would do for his friend.

Meanwhile outside the court a group held a mini-demonstration demanding that Ndlovu be sent to prison. We managed to speak to one of the community member Mr justice Mathe who said they were happy with the conviction.

“We are so happy that the law took its course what Ndlovu did is not acceptable to the community and we believe the police will also bring Ncube to justice,” Mr Mathe said.

Police have appealed to members of the public with information that will lead to the arrest of Ncube to come forward
