THE ruling Zanu-PF Midlands Province has appointed Central Committee member, Cde Godwin Shiri, as the new provincial vice-chairperson.

The position fell vacant following the death of Cde Kizito Chivamba in April. Cde Chivamba (59) — who was also Member of the National Assembly for Chiwundura died at Gweru Provincial Hospital after a short illness. He was declared a liberation war hero and buried at the Provincial Heroes Acre in Gweru.

Zanu-PF Midlands provincial spokesperson Cde Cornelius Mupereri announced the new development at the Provincial Co-ordinating Committee meeting held in Gweru yesterday after the decision was unanimously endorsed by the party members.

Cde Mpereri said Zanu-PF has launched a vigorous campaign ahead of the Chiwundura by-elections scheduled for 15 July. He said the revolutionary party was going to hold a star rally in Chiwundura on Saturday.

Zanu-PF is being represented by Cde Brown Ndlovu. Cde Ndlovu was the first runner-up of the party’s primary elections and won the ticket to represent Zanu-PF when former Zvishavane legislator, Cde Pearson Meeting Mbalekwa withdrew his candidature citing personal reasons.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared the Chiwundura parliamentary seat vacant and a nominations court sat to confirm the candidates for the by-elections. President Mugabe has since declared 15 July as the date of the by-election.
