THE Government has slashed the fees for car registration from $160 to $80, but announced a sharp increase to $2 500 from $785 for personalised number plates.

According to a Government Gazette released on Friday, the Government said the changes were done in accordance with Statutory instrument 54 of 2018 Vehicle Registration and Licensing (Amendment) Regulation, 2018 (No 18). According to the new schedule, trailer registration which was $140, has been reduced to $70 while a trailer number plate is down to $70 from $140. Replacing lost number plates now also cost $80 from $160.

A third number plate now cost $17,50 from $35 while replacement of a registration book is now at $15 from $30. There had been concerns that vehicle registration in Zimbabwe was one of the most expensive in the region. This has resulted in some people failing to register their vehicles. It is estimated that 40 percent of vehicles in Zimbabwe are not registered with the Central Vehicle Registry prejudicing the country millions in potential revenue.
