A ZIMBABWEAN man who is on the run in the country after skipping bail on a sodomy charge has reportedly been caught in a xenophobic storm in South Africa.

Cliff Tawanda Kafesu has been holed in the country since 2010 after escaping Zimbabwe after being granted bail on a charge of indecent exposure and public nuisance

According to sources in the neighboring country, last week Kafesu was attacked by unknown assailants at his Cape Town flat, in an alleged xenophobic attack.

“He had now settled in an area where there a few foreigners staying there, he was particularly singled out because he now had a high end job and was said to be living a largely luxurious life yet he was a foreigner.

“He called relatives informing them that he was now afraid to go back to the apartment because of the attacks hence he had been staying with friends all along,” said the source.

A close relative of Kafesu who spoke on condition of anonymity said they now did not know how they were going to help protect him.

“We no longer know where he will be safe, we are discussing as a family how best to assist him,” said the relative

In Zimbabwe he was nabbed after patrons at a popular Harare night spot complained that they were seen fondling their privates and kissing with his male colleagues.

Kafesu was charged with indecent exposure and public nuisance after he had openly states he was gay and he was just expressing his feelings for his male ‘lover’.

Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Mozambique have over the years been forced to evacuate hundreds of their citizens following the violence targeted at African immigrants.

South Africa, which is Africa’s second-largest economy, is a major destination for African migrants searching for economic opportunities.
