A 46-year-old Chivi woman died a few hours after she was bitten by a scorpion in an incident that has left villagers shocked.

Ms Fielder Makoti from Mhande Village under Headman Madamombe in Chivi, Masvingo Province died last week after being bitten by a venomous scorpion.

Confirming the incident, Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Charity Mazula said they received a report of sudden death where a woman was bitten to death by a scorpion believed to be poisonous.

“I can confirm that a woman aged 46 died after she was bitten by a scorpion and died at the hospital barely three hours after the incident. We are treating the case as sudden death.

“I want to encourage members of the public from all over the country especially in the rural areas to be careful and alert because during the rainy season such incidents tend to be on the rise,” she said.

Sources told the Sunday News that Ms Makoti was at her homestead with her husband Mr Tobias Chindakuda (48) when the incident happened.

The two were whiling up time in their kitchen hut on 26 December around 9pm before they retired to bed and Ms Makoti was leaning against the wallwhen she was stung on the back.

She is said to have started complaining of pain and dizziness. Realising that her condition was deteriorating, her husband rushed her to Mhandamhabwe Clinic in the area where she could not be assisted.

She was, however, immediately transferred to Chivi District Hospital where she passed on at midnight before much could be done to save her.
